Broken Air Conditioner? This Is Why!

Broken Air Conditioner

Summer is here and that means your air conditioner is on. The big question is: is it working properly? Without it, Wisconsin summers are nearly unbearable. Let’s take a look at some common air conditioner problems to watch out for this season, and why a broken air conditioner helps no one.

Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant leaks are a major problem. If levels are too low or too high, your AC unit will not work its best. Temperatures will rise and drop randomly, which means your house will never be comfortable. Also, adding more refrigerant will not solve the problem, because it’ll just leak again. Depending on where the leak is, you may have to pay a lot of money to get it repaired. You’ll want to hire a trained technician to fix the leak, test it out, and then fill the unit with the correct amount of refrigerant per the unit manufacturer’s specifications.

Broken Air Conditioner Filter

A broken, clogged or dirty filter is one of the most common reasons why your AC unit isn’t working right. Some filters need to be replaced often, others just every few months. Additionally, some just need to be cleaned when they’re dirty. You will find all this information from the manufacturer, but a trained technician can also help you out. A common rule of thumb is to check if you see light coming through the filter. If you can’t, then it’s probably clogged or dirty. Dirty filters reduce airflow and cause your unit to not work well.

Thermostat Sensor Problems

The thermostat sensor measures the temperature of the air coming into the unit. If the sensor is knocked out of position, it could be measuring the temperature incorrectly. This would cause your unit to operate improperly. Making sure the thermostat sensor is mounted correctly ensures correct temperatures measurements and proper AC unit operation.

Electrical Control Failures

Compressors, fans, and other control wear out over time. It’s recommended that you get these systems checked out by a professional if this happens. One way to reduce these types of failures is to not turn your unit completely on/off. Instead, using the thermostat to regulate adequate temperatures is a better method of temperature control.

Improper Regular Maintenance

Performing regularly scheduled maintenance on your air conditioner is the best way to make sure it’s functioning right. This includes cleaning the filters, as we mentioned before, and cleaning the coils as well. If you don’t, it’s possible that the compressor, fans, and unit as a whole will break.
